AHRQ’s Patient Education Materials Assessment Tool (PEMAT)
helps health professionals and others select educational materials
that are easy for patients to understand and use. The tool’s reliability
and validity testing is discussed in a recent journal article,
“Development of the Patient Education Materials Assessment Tool
(PEMAT): A new measure of understandability and actionability for
print and audiovisual patient information.”

Published in the September issue of Patient Education and Counseling
this article is freely available until October 15th at: http://authors.elsevier.com/a/1PaLK_GoWni7Cf.

The PEMAT and Users’ Guide—along with PEMAT auto-scoring forms—
are available at: http://www.ahrq.gov/pemat. A user-friendly tool that
requires no training beyond reading the User’s Guide, the PEMAT is
the first tool to measure whether materials are actionable as well
as understandable. The PEMAT can be used for audio-visual as
well as print materials.
