In This Issue

Just a few more days left until National Health IT (NHIT) Week – Sept. 15 through 19 – and the weather in Washington is expected to be in the 70s!

Among the highlights of NHIT Week will be a series of webinars that highlight our work to improve health, health care and control costs using health IT. Throughout the week watch for new blog posts from ONC staff about patient safety, delivery system reform, and how health IT can enable care coordination, as well as a series of posts from regional extension centers about how they are leveraging their resources to help providers adopt and meaningfully use electronic health records.

Consumer Summit Update

The 4th Annual Consumer Health IT Summit gets underway this Monday, Sept. 15. We look forward to seeing everyone who has registered to join in person at the Mayflower Hotel in Washington, D.C. Check out the most recent agenda. As you can tell, it is going to be amazing. In person registration is now closed; we're at capacity. Forgot to register? Can't make it to D.C.? Never fear! You can virtually participate for the plenary sessions starting at 9am EDT. Please follow us on Twitter – @ONC_HealthIT using #BlueButton – to join the conversation about the Summit and to let us know your experiences on the topic of patient engagement.

National Health IT Week Webinar Schedule

On Tuesday from 1 – 2 pm (all times are EDT) the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) will be talking about the progress that has been made in stopping 1 million heart attacks and strokes by 2017. The webinar is part of CDC's Public Health Grand Rounds program, so sign up for the free webinar and learn about ABCS (aspirin when appropriate, Blood pressure control, Cholesterol management and Smoking cessation).

Later Tuesday, 2:30 – 3:30pm,  join a joint ONC and Centers for Medicare & Medicaid Services (CMS) webinar about recent regulatory updates, including the CMS 2014 CEHRT Flexibility final rule, and the ONC 2014 Edition Release 2 final rule. The presentation will include:
  • Overview of CEHRT and Release 2 Rules
  • Stage 2 Extension
  • 2014 CEHRT Flexibility Options: Stages 1 & 2
  • 2014 Edition Release 2 Optional and Revised Certification Criteria
  • ONC Health IT Certification Program Updates
  • Relevant Resources
On Thursday our Policy team hosts a webinar on the rules of engagement and governance, one of the five "building blocks" of  interoperability. Hear from ONC policy chief Jodi Daniel and her team members about our governance activities during the webinar, which kicks off at 10am.

On Friday join Amy Helwig, M.D. for a webinar at 1pm to discuss the ONC Health IT Safety Action and Surveillance Plan. Dr. Helwig will be joined by a panel of experts to discuss the positive affect EHRs can have on the quality and safety of patient care and help listeners understand the types of health IT-related safety events and available interventions to prevent their occurrence.
