PharmaHelps webinar reviews effects of increased quality measurements
By Mia Burns
A two-part webinar from the PharmaHelps Network focuses on ways that providers, payers, and the pharma industry can work together to improve the patient experience and capitalize on the opportunities that healthcare reform presents. In addition, the webinar examines the most significant changes taking place in healthcare delivery, including the increased number of patients entering the system, technological advances, the need for accurate metrics, and the greater demand for professional resources and patient empowerment.
The webinar, titled Perfect Storm or Perfect Opportunity? features Bob Brown, a partner in medical advertising agency bryantBROWN Healthcare. In addition, other panelists participating in the webinar are Robert Eidus, MD, MBA, of the Vanguard Medical Group, Cranford, N.J. and Steven Peskin, MD, MBA, FACP, senior medical director of Clinical Innovations at Horizon Healthcare Innovations.
Dr. Eidus is a recognized leader in the area of health quality and outcomes, having spent 12 years affiliated with the National Committee on Quality Assurance, including serving for nine years on the Review Oversight Committee. Dr. Peskin was EVP and CMO of MediMedia USA Inc. Dr. Peskin also served as the CEO of Pharmaceutical Research Plus Inc., and founded Nelson Managed Solutions, a managed care consultancy.
The feedback regarding the webinar has been positive, says Stephen Casey, managing director of MedAdvocacy LLC and the PharmaHelps Network. Casey also organized the panel and has extensive experience in many facets of pharmaceutical commercialization such as brand management, marketing and sales management, operations startup, market and business development, and portfolio management.
“In our post-webinar survey, 83 percent rated the panel and the content as ‘above average’ or ‘excellent’”, Casey told Med Ad News Daily. “Regarding feedback on the discussion topics, it seems there’s a sense of cautious optimism – payers, providers, and pharma know that the Affordable Care Act is contributing to dramatic changes in healthcare delivery, and that all parties must make both advancements and compromises in order to keep pace. But rather than instill resignation or defeatism, the changes may be inspiring new forms of creativity and cooperation in an effort to deliver quality care while optimizing resources. We expected the ‘cautious optimism,’ but perhaps a little more caution than optimism. The webinar was titled ‘Perfect Storm or Perfect Opportunity?’ The panelists and audience seemed to agree: the answer is both, but, with effort on everyone’s part, it can be more ‘opportunity’ than ‘storm.’”
According to the panel, physicians did not receive much training on patient adherence in the past. “In many cases, pharma is now providing the training on patient adherence by creating programs and materials to assist both providers and patients with this issue,” says Casey. “EHR systems can play a variety of roles in supporting adherence – by clearly and concisely outlining the treatment regimen, evidence-based actions for adherence, and metrics for measuring success. As a result, increased EHR adoption has the potential to continually assist both providers and patients. This is a topic that begs further discussion.”
More webinars will take place in the future, Casey told Med Ad News Daily. “We had a 100 percent positive response in our post-webinar survey when we asked attendees, ‘Would you be interested in future PharmaHelps Network webinars?’ This webinar touched upon important issues associated with healthcare reform, but there is so much more to discuss. For example, one post-webinar survey respondent requested that the next webinar do a ‘deeper dive into partnership opportunities with ACOs.’ At this time, our goal is to conduct a series of webinars that explore the impact of the Affordable Care Act on relationships between pharma, providers, payers, and patients. We are planning the next to take place in approximately six to eight weeks.”
