Taking patients' narratives about clinicians from anecdote to science.

Patient stories have the potential to motivate improvement efforts. This commentary explores how patient narratives can be used to assess care quality and suggests that Web sites which collect patient submitted comments and ratings could help identify problems if managed through a systematic research-focused approach.
