Research needed to treat sickle cell disease in Africa

NIH is funding a number of efforts to develop low-cost methods to diagnose sickle cell disease, and to investigate affordable treatments to help reduce the suffering it causes. Results of this research are critical in sub-Saharan Africa, where treatments are not widely available.
