Centers for Disease Control's
Approach to Coordinated School Health Initiative

John D. Bower School Health Network The Office of Healthy Schools at the Mississippi Department of Education has teamed up with the Bureau of School Health at the Mississippi State Department of Health in order to make a difference in the lifelong health of middle and high school students across the state. By creating the Centers for Disease Control Coordinated Approach to School Health Initiative, these departments are not only offering the needed support and resources to implement the programs, but are also providing professional development and technical assistance to school districts in high-disparity areas seeking to increase students' lifelong learning of healthy behaviors. The agencies will continue to work together as the program grows in order to monitor health-related behaviors among youth and assess the effectiveness of the school policies and programs that have been put into practice.

Focus areas of the project are:

Professional development, resources, and trainings for these subject areas are provided annually, and technical assistance is available to anyone in Mississippi. There are also three assessment tools that are recommended by the CDC that provide excellent resources for schools and teachers implementing coordinated school health:
Professional development for these tools is provided by the CSHP on several occasions throughout the year. School teachers, administrators, staff, etc. are all invited to attend and receive CEU's and SEMI credits.
