Abstract

BACKGROUND:

Rotavirus vaccine was recommended for US infants in 2006. We estimated baseline prevaccine burden and monitored postvaccine trends in gastroenteritis-coded and rotavirus-coded hospitalizations among US children.

METHODS:

We analyzed data from the State Inpatient Databases (SID) for 29-44 US states over a 10-year period (2000-2009) to calculate gastroenteritis and rotavirus-coded hospitalization rates by age group, sex, and region, among children <5 2009="" a="" age.="" and="" associated="" based="" by="" cost="" costs.="" diarrhea="" estimated="" extrapolating="" gastroenteritis="" hospitalization="" hospitalizations="" in="" national="" observed="" of="" on="" p="" population="" postvaccine="" pre-="" rates="" reductions="" the="" to="" treatment="" us="" we="" years="">

RESULTS:

The prevaccine (2000-2006) annual average gastroenteritis-coded hospitalization rate among children <5 .001="" 10="" 13-18="" 15="" 2008="" 2009="" 50="" 51="" 5="" 6="" 71-82="" 74="" 77="" a="" age="" all="" among="" and="" annual="" approximately="" average="" children="" combined="" compared="" costs.="" declined="" decreases="" diarrhea="" during="" estimated="" groups="" hospital="" hospitalization="" hospitalizations="" in="" million="" nationally="" observed="" of="" p="" per="" prevaccine="" range="" rate="" rates="" reduction="" regions.="" respectively="" rotavirus-coded="" the="" to="" us="" was="" we="" were="" with="" years="">

CONCLUSIONS:

Since implementation of the US rotavirus vaccination program, a marked reduction in diarrhea hospitalizations and related hospital charges has occurred among US children.
