AHRQ’s Nursing Home Survey on Patient Safety Culture: 2016 User Comparative Database Report is now available and provides results from 209 nursing homes and 12,395 nursing home staff respondents. Results are compared by characteristics of the participating nursing home including nursing home bed size, ownership, urban/rural status, and census region, and respondent characteristics that include job title, work area, interaction with residents, hours worked per week, shift, and tenure with the nursing home. Overall Perceptions of Resident Safety, which measures staff perceptions of how well residents are cared for and safe, had the highest average percent positive response at 86 percent. Staffing, which measures staff perceptions of whether there are enough staff to handle the workload, meet residents’ needs, and keep residents safe because there is not much staff turnover, had the lowest average percent positive response at 48 percent.

Nursing Home User Comparative Database Reports
Many nursing homes using the AHRQ Nursing Home Survey on Patient Safety Culture have expressed interest in comparing their results to other nursing homes. In response, the AHRQ has established the Nursing Home Survey on Patient Safety Culture Comparative Database. This database is a central repository for survey data from nursing homes that have administered the AHRQ patient safety culture survey instrument.

Nursing Home Survey on Patient Safety Culture: 2016 User Comparative Database Report (Part 1 [
- 3 MB] Part 2 [- 1 MB]) – The latest edition of the AHRQ Nursing Home Survey on Patient Safety Culture User Comparative Database Report presents data from 209 nursing homes and 12,395 nursing home respondents who completed the survey between January 2014 and April 2016. The report presents statistics (averages, standard deviations, minimum and maximum scores, and percentiles) on the patient safety culture composites and items from the survey. Appendixes A and B present overall results by nursing home characteristics (bed size, ownership, census region, and urban/rural status) and respondent characteristics (job title, nursing home work area, interaction with residents, shift worked most often, and tenure in nursing home).
