Healthy life-years lost and excess bed-days due to 6 patient safety incidents: empirical evidence from English hospitals.



    The long-term consequences of patient safety problems can be difficult to quantify. This retrospective medical record review and modeling study estimated healthy life-years lost due to preventable adverse events such as venous thromboembolismhealth care–associated infections, and deaths from low-risk procedures. The authors recommend using these estimates of long-term harm to prioritize prevention efforts.
