CDC's Primary Care and Public Health Initiative

Linking Primary Care and Public Health through Residency Program Partnerships

Strong linkages across clinical medicine and public health are vital to addressing national health priorities. Collaboration among clinicians and public health is especially critical, given the United States' rising health care costs and poorer health indicators when compared with other industrialized nations.
To connect and foster relationships between physicians and local and state public health professionals, CDC works with clinical educators to develop public health educational resources that can be delivered in residency training programs. With each new educational resource, CDC hosts a teleconference, connecting educators with national experts to discuss the instructional materials and share ideas for using them to improve our population's health.
CDC's Primary Care and Public Health Initiative (PCPHI):
  • Uses existing CDC or HHS publications and products to develop teaching materials for resident education addressing important population and public health issues
  • Hosts teleconferences with CDC subject matter experts
  • Promotes understanding of the significant role physicians play in public health
  • Increases the reach and involvement of physicians in national public health initiatives
